Open Evening:
Many thanks to all those students who helped out on Open Evening last week, either working in departments or as guides. Feedback from prospective parents was extremely positive describing our students as “fantastic ambassadors for the school” and saying how much they enjoyed their visit and hoping their children will be able to secure a place here next year.
Confidence Course:
Girls from Year 9 and 10 spent a day working Clare Young, a former Apprentice finalist, developing their self confidence. Activities included learning how advertising works, marketing yourself and designing an APP to help teenagers. The girls really enjoyed themselves and learned a lot too.
Enterprise Days:
Yr 11 students took part in a maths based Enterprise Day at the end of September working on the development of a prototype catapult that gained initial capital for their business. They then had to mass produce and sell catapults to gain more money for their business. This money was then speculated on the stock exchange and with its unpredictable nature, and the courage of the investors, some made millions, others made loses. Year 10s will be experiencing the Bradford Business Game just before half term. These days form part of the curriculum entitlement for KS4 students with a focus on “enterprise” activities – effective group work, communication, marketing and presentation skills.
National performers:
Brittany Fuller and Joe Elliott successfully auditioned to dance at a national schools’ event which was held in London last week. The audience was well into the hundreds and comprised of guest speakers, students and parents. This is the second year running where our students have represented the school, and themselves at this prestigious event.
Surrey School Games:
Congratulations to two of our last year’s Year 11 students who won medals in the Surrey Schools Games this year. Callum Todd won the gold medal for the Intermediate Boys 800m in a time of 1:58.57 and Sam Crooke won bronze in the Intermediate Boys Javelin. Callum also made the final of the English Schools 800m and came 7th. Well done boys.
Top University Places:
Students who left us in 2009 have just started their university courses at Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. They include Richard Jenkins, Sarah Gregory, Lawrence Tidy and Sarah Abrams. We wish them well with their studies.
Sport:
Our boys football teams are making progress in the National Cup competition. Year 7s are through to the third round having beaten Matthew Arnold School 8-0! Year11s are in the same position having won on penalties at Epsom & Ewell High School. Our intermediate girls did extremely well in the first round of the English Schools Cross Country Cup, finishing in second place. They now progress to round 2 in November. The Year 10/11 girls’ football team beat Blenheim School 7-2 to progress to the second round of the county tournament. Year 7/8 girls have progressed to the third round of the English Schools Competition with a 4-0 victory over Charters.
