Welcome to my first ever Winston Blog. A number of events have taken place recently and here is a flavour of what has been happening at Winston.
We were delighted to be awarded the ArtsMark Gold Award earlier this month for the work our students do in art, music, drama and dance. Well done to everyone involved in the bid process. The Arts Extravaganza was a great evening with wonderful individual and collective performances from talented students from all year groups.
Year 6 students spent a day in school this week as part of their Induction programme and their parent met with staff on Wednesday. These pupils were very well looked after by both Year 8 Peer Mentors and new prefects all of whom who did a brilliant job. Current Year 11 students ran sports sessions as part of their Leadership awards programme. Feedback from both pupils and parents was extremely positive.
Activities Week and Work Experience take place next week and I hope all of you enjoy yourselves and make the most of what is on offer. You’ll look back on these events in the future and remember going to new places, meeting new people, pushing yourself to the limit and enjoying yourselves.
The maths department have been very busy. There have been interform competitions in Years 7-9. The Year7 competition was won by RLU and the Year 8 by SKE. However, only 7 teams took part in Year 7 and 9 for Year 8. What about the rest of you??
Maths Leaders went to Holy Trinity to work with 60 Year 5s who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The event ended with a penalty shoot-out with Ali Wade and Andy McLean trying to be Robert Green! Miss Rapley and Mrs Colloff and our students were thanked by Holy Trinity teachers and pupils who are looking forward to our students returning in the future.
28 students from Year 8 and 9 spent a day looking at the job and role of engineers with the Smallpiece Trust . Mr Broyd had organised the day and you can see what students felt about the day, and see photos, on our website.
Georgie Heel in Year 10 has been an absolute star, according to Mrs Bell. She has choreographed dances, organised and led dance rehearsals since becoming dance captain and is a real asset to the school. She has the respect of her peers and works wonders with taming the Boys’ Dance Company.
Mrs Snowden would like to congratulate Joely Maisey Year 10, Charlie Johnson and Libby Warn Year 7 and Katie Hill Year 8, all of whom have produced work of a very high standard recently.
