Launch of the Parent Portal: 28th January 2011

You will now be aware that we have re-instated the Progress Reviews for all of our students and I hope that this has been beneficial.  You will have been given a password for the Parent Portal for FROG at the Review meeting but if there are any problems, please contact either Mr Parsons, parsonsj@student.wcsc.org.uk or Mrs French, frenchs@student.wcsc.org.uk.
As parents this may or may not be, the first time you have seen FROG, depending on whether your child has let you, it is certainly the first opportunity you will have had of accessing it as a parent.  Although the system is in its infancy and will continue to be developed in the future I hope you will find it useful.  You will certainly be able to access important information about what goes on in the school.

English Baccalaureate
We were delighted last week with the news about the new English Baccalaureate.  This is a new league table measure of how many students achieve a C grade or higher in English language, maths, two sciences, a modern foreign language and a humanities subject.  We are the 5th highest English Baccalaureate performing secondary school (out of 53) in Surrey which is a tremendous achievement.

GCSE Results
We were also delighted by the early GCSE entry maths results last week.  Some of our most able maths students all either achieved, or exceeded, their expected grades with 22 A* and 12 A grades.  9 students who were in danger of not achieving at least a C grade in both English and maths met or exceeded their target grade.  These students will now either follow an International GCSE course in maths and will take the exam in the summer or re-sit maths to try to improve on their grade.

Activities Week/Work Experience
This takes place between 27th June – 1st July and includes the usual visits to Newquay (Yr 7 watersports), Cote d’Opale, Normandy (Yr 8), Isle of Wight (Yr 9 multi-activity experience) and
Yr 10 study tours to France and Germany. All other Year 10 students will spend the week in various locations on work experience.  We have a new provider, HSC Careers, for work experience this year, with a new on line booking system for students.  Students will begin selecting their placements using the new system shortly and we urge parents to make sure that his is done early to ensure the greatest choice of placements.

Visits
The ski/snowboarding trip led by Mr Fricker, will be spending half term in Bardonecchia, Italy.  Catering students will be going to Le Touquet in April with Mrs Vadi and Mrs O’Brien and Yr 10 geography students will be on a study tour to Morocco at Easter, led by Ms Harris.

Rotary Club Summer Fair
This annual event takes place each August Bank Holiday Monday on the school field and is organised by the Rotary Club of Woking District.  We have just heard that over £2000 was raised last year and helped to support Woking Hospice.  I hope you will be able to support this year’s event.

INSET day Monday 28th February 2011
This date had originally been identified as an INSET day but because of the days lost before Christmas to the weather I have decided to make Monday 28th February a normal teaching day and all students are expected to attend.
